Advice for Businesses

Business Cyclists

DID YOU KNOW..?
People who cycle to work are proven to be fitter, healthier, more productive & focused, have less time off ill, recover from illness quicker, are less likely to suffer with stress, and are more likely to consistently turn up on time.

All this means that encouraging your workforce to cycle, both by providing the necessary facilities, and by word of mouth, could be the best thing you do for your business!

More and more people are beginning to take responsibility for their own contribution to the environment and one of the ways they’re doing that is by commuting to work by bike.

Not only does it save money on petrol or fares, those who work in or around city centres also save on the escalating parking charges too and have far less problems with traffic – they can use most bus lanes and the increasing number of cycle lanes and routes too.

Cycle commuters also have a distinct advantage in high-density but slow-moving traffic; they’re quicker.

This does mean that the more forward-looking businesses who want to have a healthier workforce are providing facilities for cyclists to make their commute even more attractive.

These facilities include:

  • showers and changing facilities in some of the toilet areas
  • secure areas for locking bikes (remember that around 10 bikes can be locked in the space occupied by one parked car!)
  • tax incentives for those who want to buy a new bike (see CycleScheme.co.uk)

Contrary to what some more negative people think, these facilities are not expensive and some local councils offer grants for businesses and other organisations to encourage local businesses to do this.

If you’re a business owner or manager, offering facilities and other incentives like this are a great way to set your business apart from your competition!
